The GC Lab Application Engineer works semi-independently to plan, design, and implement gas chromatography applications to meet customer specifications, based on data provided by the customer, previous applications, personal experience, and best engineering and chemical practice. This role requires in-depth knowledge of the chemistry, pressure, temperature, flow and/or analytical products to effectively support customers’ requirements and provide solutions for technical difficulties.

DUTIES/RESULTS:

• Designs gas chromatograph analytical methods to meet specifications (column system design, including valves, vents, and restrictors) for both in-house projects and preliminary sales/proposals opportunities.
• Programs gas chromatographs to meet application and specification requirements.
• To provide active support to gas chromatography tuning, preparation of GC operation data and report.
• Participates in the fabrication, installation, and testing of columns to ensure gas chromatographs and equipment are configured and functioning according to specifications.
• Tests ability of gas chromatographs to meet repeatability and separation requirements.
• Ability to troubleshoot gas chromatography issues.
• Confers with supervisor to implement lab-operating procedures and resolve problems.
• Duties will involve in-depth knowledge of the pressure, temperature, flow and/or analytical products to effectively support our customers and provide solutions for technical difficulties.
• Will research problems for and with external technical experts, conveying answers to customers when appropriate.
• Will acquire and maintain a current knowledge of technology and hardware applicable to the assigned line of products.
• Support the manager to ensure the quality of the GC produced and to ensure the cleanliness and safety of the lab.
• Participates in meetings, seminars, and training sessions to stay apprised of new developments in the field.
• Works with other departments such as sales, customer service, and engineering to provide technical assistance.
• Conducts final acceptance testing and demonstrates gas chromatographs to customers and end users.
• Prepares performance reports and application documentation packages for final review by supervisor.
• Assists in all aspects of GC handling, inclusive of receiving, set up, and packaging for shipment.
• Will assist in developing training programs for new hires and refresher training for existing personnel and customers for assigned products.
• May occasionally be required to travel to customer sites for meetings and/or application troubleshooting in operating plant environments.
• Maintains, at all times, a safe working environment in the laboratory in conformance with all government regulations.

SPECIFICATIONS:

• BS degree in Chemical Engineering or Chemistry is preferred. Vocational School diploma in Instrumentation or similar field plus 3-5 years’ experience, or applicable technical training will be considered in lieu of a BS degree.
• Must have basic understanding of electronic and/or technical and engineering support tools required to perform required tasks. Ability to meet deadlines and manage priorities is important.
• Experience in handling Process/Laboratory GC, column selection and troubleshooting are strongly preferred.
