Wood is currently recruiting for an Automation Lead Engineer to oversee the design, development, and implementation of automation systems for oil and gas projects.
Automation Lead will head up a team within Systems Integration (SI) in our Digital Consulting business. 
This is a hybrid role that can be based at any of the following UK offices: Aberdeen, Staines, Reading, Glasgow or Northampton with the expectation of travel as required. 
Please note applicants must be able to pass HMG Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) check.

The Role 
As the Automation Team Lead, you will be responsible for the distribution of workload and ensuring the team are on track with the current deliverables in line with achieving agreed client specifications. 
Alongside the day-to-day support towards to the team, the Automation Team Lead will ensuring accurate progress tracking, reporting and will attend regular meetings with both internal and external stakeholders. 
This opportunity is ideal for an individual who has proven experience in leading medium- large, sized teams, has previously been involved in brownfield upgrades and/or replacements specifically within automation and control projects and possess the capability to develop a program from the ground up.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

Lead the design and implementation of automation system and cyber security upgrades for a national infrastructure gas project
Oversee Design, configuration and programming of industrial control systems, including PLCs, SCADA, and DCS platforms
Oversee the installation, commissioning, and handover of automation equipment and systems
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify areas for process improvement and enhance efficiency
Ensure compliance with industry standards, safety protocols, and regulatory requirements for automation systems
Analyse system performance data, troubleshoot issues, and provide technical expertise to resolve operational challenges
Manage project timelines, budgets, and deliverables while coordinating with vendors and contractors
Provide mentorship and guidance to junior engineers and technical staff

Expected:  

Bachelor’s degree in Automation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred)
Extensive experience in automation systems design and implementation, preferably within the oil and gas sector
Proficiency in PLC, SCADA, DCS, HMI programming, and configuration. Allen Bradely ControlLogix experience would be preferable
Strong knowledge of industrial communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, Profibus, OPC)
Familiarity with safety systems such as SIS and SIL compliance
Excellent problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to technical challenges
Demonstrated leadership abilities with experience managing engineering teams and projects
Strong communication skills for effective collaboration and stakeholder engagement

Desirable:

Knowledge of National Gas and common industry standards
Knowledge of National Gas G35 process and procedures
Knowledge of both existing and emerging automation technologies
Experience of Brownfield projects
Certifications such as TUV Functional Safety Engineer or similar are an advantage
