JOB SUMMARY
Performs electrical and electronic repairs, preventive maintenance, equipment installation and modifications to a wide variety of production equipment with limited supervision.
Safely and effectively execute daily tasks related to production equipment maintenance.
Electrical & controls technicians perform diagnostic checks on automated systems, monitor automated systems, and isolate problems for repair. If a problem occurs, the technician needs to troubleshoot the issue and determine if the problem is mechanical, electrical or from the computer systems controlling the process. Once the issue has been diagnosed, the technician must repair or replace any necessary components, such as a sensor or electrical wiring.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Under general direction, and in accordance with all applicable federal, state and local laws/regulations and Corporate Johnson & Johnson, procedures and guidelines, this position:
• Performs advanced duties to install, change, and repair electrical service and electronic equipment.
• Installs and repairs a variety of complex plant and office equipment, machinery and lighting.
• Ensures on time completion by rapidly planning, making layout designs, determining methods and procedures, selecting and obtaining proper tools, materials, supplies, and necessary fixtures for projects.
• Makes complex electrical repairs, such as locating and wiring electrical outlets and lighting in outages or new installations.
• Leads in preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical equipment.
• Coordinates project scheduling with other maintenance technicians, engineers, plant personnel and contractors.
• Follows all company safety policies and other safety precautions within the lab, shop, and manufacturing area.
• Ensures other technicians follow safety policies and precautions. Performs other complex responsibilities as assigned and not all responsibilities listed may be assigned.
• Leads or assists lower level technicians.
• Investigate, diagnose, and repair process equipment electrical and control system failures.
• Restore process equipment control software in PLC’s (Programmable Logic Controllers).
• Install and maintain ac and dc motors, controllers, and circuits.
• Install and test process equipment electrical wiring and electronic control systems.
• Support Engineering groups in updating electrical BOM’s (Bill of Materials) for process equipment.
• Support Engineering groups in the implementation, tracking, and closing of ADAPTIV documentation.
• Support Engineering Groups in the design and development of equipment controls modifications.
• Support Engineering groups in conducting equipment process control software qualifications per written protocol.
• Perform and document electrical related PM’s (Planned Maintenance) on process and facilities equipment as assigned.
• Document all equipment service activities and modifications in the process Equipment Logs.
• Able to understand basic concepts of electrical distribution and lighting systems.
• Assist in installation and maintenance of electrical components of production equipment.
• Able to understand basic concepts of electrical systems and electrical documentation.
• Able to understand basic concepts of facilities equipment (air handlers, chillers, boilers).
• Able to read and work from detailed wiring diagrams and blueprints.
• All associates in this position are required to be “on call” as defined in the “On Call Policy” and the Fair Labor Standards Act and are required by management to respond to emergency or essential work situations based on established departmental schedules
• Maintain process equipment control software in PLC’s.
• Maintain and restore process equipment control software in PC based operator interface programs.
• Perform control panel and cabinet layouts per electrical standards.
• Working knowledge of electrical distribution and lighting systems including high and low voltage systems.
• Support installation/relocation of equipment through installation of required power to production equipment.
• Support plant safety through maintenance of electrical systems.
• Write process equipment control software for PLC’s and PC based operator interfaces.
• Support Engineering groups in updating electrical AutoCAD drawings and updating BOM’s (Bills of Material) for process equipment electrical and control systems per industry and corporate standards.
• Develop written PM (Planned Maintenance) procedures for process equipment electrical and electronic maintenance requirements.
• Identify and recommend electrical devices and components for equipment spare parts inventories.
• Support Engineering groups in the development of written procedures for the operation, testing, and validation of equipment control systems.
• Maintain plant electrical distribution and lighting systems including high and low voltage systems.
• Maintain plant emergency systems including emergency lights, exit signs.
• Basic knowledge of electrical and control components of plant facilities support equipment (boilers, chillers, air handlers, etc.)
• Basic knowledge of plant phone wiring and equipment.
• Basic knowledge of plant network wiring and equipment.
• Support and maintain plant paging system including installation and repair of speakers and maintenance of paging amplifier system.
• Develop functional process equipment requirements into written control program logic (PLC software and PC based operator interface programs).
• Support Engineering groups in creating electrical AutoCAD drawings and creating BOM’s (Bills of Material) for process equipment electrical and control systems per industry and corporate standards.
• Provide electrical support for plant facilities support equipment (boilers, chillers, air handlers).
• Support Information Management by installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting plant phone wiring and equipment.
• Support Information Management by installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting plant network wiring and equipment.
• Lead control systems projects as assigned (for projects containing PLC and PC based operator interfaces) from concept phase to implementation phase, including development of financial and schedule requirements, documentation of functional requirements and specifications, programming, and completion of other validation documentation.
• Participate on multidisciplinary project teams to identify functional process equipment requirements for new or existing systems.
• Support Engineering Groups in the design and development of new equipment controls
• Support Engineering groups in developing System Requirements Specifications (SRS), System Design Specifications (SDS), and Control System Validation (CSV) documentation, and in conducting equipment process control software qualifications per written protocol.
• Assume technical ownership for maintenance and troubleshooting of computer control systems as assigned and function as the main point of contact and center of expertise for those systems.
• Support Control Systems Technician Facilitator in the training and skill development of other control system technicians on specific control systems’ specifications and maintenance.
• Train manufacturing associates on the operation of specific control systems.
• Assist Lock Out/Tag out (LOTO) Program Administrator in developing and posting equipment lock out procedures as assigned.
• Perform work in a safe manner in accordance to the National Electric Code (NEC), OSHA Electrical Safety-Related Work Practices Standard and to the Plant Safety Policy.
• Responsible for communicating business related issues or opportunities to next management level
• For those who supervise or manage a staff, responsible for ensuring that subordinates follow all Company guidelines related to Health, Safety and Environmental practices and that all resources needed to do so are available and in good condition, if applicable
• Responsible for ensuring personal and Company compliance with all Federal, State, local and Company regulations, policies, and procedures
• Performs other duties assigned as needed
QUALIFICATIONS
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
• Requires 4-6 Years Electrical Work Experience
• High school graduate, G.E.D. or equivalent skills, experience, or training.
• Minimum of two years of technical school, military training, or equivalent OJT (On the Job Training) in electrical/electronic controls.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES and AFFILIATIONS
• Advanced computer and database management skills.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal relation skills.
• Statistical and analytical problem solving.
• Fundamentals of industrial sensors (non-contact sensors, thermocouples, RTDs, level sensors, flow sensors, safety interlocks).
• Standard testing techniques and practices for general purpose and specialized test equipment (volt ohmmeters, frequency counters/generators, oscilloscopes, current clamps, programmers).
• Organizational skills to balance priorities with workload.
• Mathematical and mechanical aptitude skills.
• Writing and oral communications skills.
• Self-motivated and capable of taking a lead position in completing duties
• Self-directed and capable of determining needed resources in completing tasks with little or no supervision
• Knowledge of electrical systems and power distribution systems
• Knowledge of electrical design/drafting with ability to clearly and accurately annotate electrical documents, prints, and software programs.
• Knowledge of industrial controls, including PLC’s and PC based operator interfaces (design, programming, start-up)
• Knowledge of electrical and control components of facilities equipment (boilers, chillers, air handlers).
• Basic knowledge of motion control modules (I/O processors, digital/analog servos, high-speed counters, steppers, and absolute resolvers/encoders).
• Working knowledge of ac and dc motor drives and control circuits (installation, set-up, protection, operation, and troubleshooting).
• Prefer knowledge of lean manufacturing and manufacturing processes such as Just in Time (JIT), KANBAN, Pull Systems.
