IT/OT Integration

What Does IT/OT Integration Mean?

Within the field of industrial automation, IT/OT integration refers to the increasing convergence of Information Technology (IT) and Operational Technology (OT) systems within an organization.

Traditionally, IT systems manage data-centric tasks, such as data storage, cloud computing, and virtualization, while OT systems handle the physical processes, such as manufacturing, control systems, and real-time operations.

The integration of these two domains aims to enhance efficiency, streamline operations, and drive digital transformation. By connecting IT and OT, companies can achieve improved data collection, real-time analytics, and comprehensive digital optimization.

What Skills are Required for IT/OT Integration?

The integration of IT and OT calls upon a unique basket of skillsets outside the traditional domain of automation and control and requires more IT-based skills dealing with data and modern advanced technologies associated with advanced applications of Factory 4.0.

Strong IT Skills:

  • Networking and Windows Server: Proficiency in managing networks, VLANs, and Windows Server environments.
  • User and Group Policies: Ability to configure and manage users and group policies within Windows Active Directory.
  • Databases: Experience in designing, configuring, and managing relational databases such as SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, and OSIsoft.
  • Command-Line Scripting: Ability to develop and integrate complex ICS systems using scripting languages like Linux shell, Windows PowerShell, and Windows CMD.
