Job Description
Contributing to technical delivery of engineering excellence through:
Executing assigned scopes of work.
Providing discipline expertise to the business.
Supporting and supervising task delegation to team.
Uses technical knowledge to perform engineering assignments and produce engineering deliverables including complex problems. Completes almost any engineering tasks with minimal guidance and direction. May serve as the primary discipline engineer or discipline technical authority on projects with small to medium complexity.
Performs engineering assignments, usually representing a significant portion of a larger project. Selects engineering techniques to solve problems and makes design recommendations.
Requires mature professional knowledge in planning and conducting assignments having scope for co-ordination of difficult tasks.
Applies specific area(s) of expertise in own discipline area.
Responsibilities
Executing assigned scopes of work.
Carry out control and instrumentation engineering functions on designated studies and projects in a timely and cost-effective manner and ensure technical quality of work produced is in accordance with safety and operational requirements and complies with the latest international and local standards, Regulations and Acts and meets project and Client standards.
To coordinate and supervise design functions within a project /study context.
Performance against schedules, i.e. ability to prioritise and produce own work in a timely manner to assist other roles to complete on time.
Thorough knowledge of Wood PLC design procedures, the design process, design systems available, engineering standards and effect of design process on project process.
Prepare technical specifications, contract specifications, design criteria and other documents required by the project / study.
Responsible for engineering content, discipline design drawings and technical documents within a project / study.
Provide technical design guidance to project staff on instrumentation & control system designs.
Review and comment on documents from control & instrumentation discipline and from other disciplines.
Review equipment’s & installation contractors and produce technical adjudications / recommendations.
Produce project filing system which is maintained, kept up to date in a discipline or project system which all project design personnel utilise.
Review vendor documentation for compliance with project / study specifications.
Compare procurement costs against budget and provide feedback to estimating.
Estimate, control and review design scope changes.
Provide feedback on the quality, use and value of design systems used in design.
Attend factory acceptance tests and provide input to vendor’s test documentation.
Produce site inspections, functionality testing and commissioning documentation.
Assist with plant installation and commissioning.
Prepare project close out reports with comparison of design and procurement budgets.
Liaise with client to ensure that agreed designs are in accordance with agreed requirements.
Respond to technical queries from projects, client and site.
Conduct regular design group meetings within a project / study context in the 3D environment.
Allocate work and provide assistance to discipline engineers and designers on projects / studies.
Providing discipline expertise:
Solves problems requiring development of new approaches or new uses for existing approaches; exercises mature professional judgment in evaluating and selecting technical strategic options.
As necessary, modifies established guidelines, devises new approaches, applies existing criteria in new ways and draws conclusions from comparative situations.
Regularly functions as a technical leader or significant contributor to a major complex problem or project
Produces innovative ideas and solves problems requiring development of new approaches or new uses for existing approaches
Consistently called on to use creativity and professional judgement to formulate results based on engineering standards, experience and constructive thinking
Develops unique solutions for complex technical problems
Anticipates potential problems and takes the initiative to solve complex problems through creative thinking and creative use of internal and external resources both inside and outside of discipline expertise
Exercises mature professional judgement in identifying the implications of experimental results.
Understands customer needs and applies technical solutions to meet goals.
Provide technical input and support to proposals as required.
Supporting and Supervising task delegation to team:
May supervise a small work group consisting of technical/professional staff with some coaching from own supervisor, or may provide advice and guidance in area of specialization to others.
Assist in performing managerial tasks as requested, such as assigning tasks to engineers; planning and coordinating portions of the engineering work; preparing scopes, schedules, and budgets; attending project meetings; and developing lesser-experienced technical professionals.
Discusses with other senior engineers to agree priorities and implications on work of others.
Approves work schedules and makes recommendations for increased resources and special equipment.
Makes commitments on acceptance of projects, completion dates, resources and staff required to meet goals.
Coordinates the activities of engineering and design groups assigned to small projects.
Participates in developing deadlines, projects and work to be done.
May manage one or more small projects, with responsibility for cost, schedule, resources allocation and risk.
Qualifications
Qualifications:
BSc, BEng or B.Tech in Engineering or National Diploma (or equivalent) with a minimum of 10 years’ experience.
ECSA registered.
Knowledge, skills and experience:
Minimum of 10 years design experience in the mining and minerals processing industry.
Site experience – construction and commissioning.
