Sharing our experience for a better blue tomorrow.

Internship from February 2025 for 6 months

Introduction

The upper riser balcony (URB) is typically located above the static waterline and is therefore not captured by classical linear diffraction theory. Experience from model tests has shown that waves do reach the URB, thereby potentially causing non-linear effects on the motions response of spread-moored FPSOs.

Description

Quantify the importance of different components of non-linear hydrodynamics originating from various URB configurations (e.g. no URB, 1-sided URB, 2-sided URB, various draughts, etc.) through the use of linear diffraction software (HydroStar and Aqwa-Line), non-linear seakeeping software (Aqwa-Naut), 2-D CFD (Star CCM+), and comparison to existing model test data.

Your Role

Once familiarised with the software available for this study, the successful candidate will conduct the numerical analyses, gather relevant information from existing model test data, develop an understanding of the various numerical tools and their limitations, explain and quantify the non-linear hydrodynamics arising from the URB.

What it will bring to you

• Deep knowledge of vessel motion response and non-linear hydrodynamics
• Practical experience in various commercial software typically used in the offshore industry
• Although the case study is focused around FPSOs, the skills and knowledge developed during this internship are common to many other offshore floating structures.

Job requirements

• Final year undergraduate student with specific academic background in hydrodynamics, seakeeping and offshore floating structuresAdditionally, some academic knowledge / experience in Computational Fluid Dynamics would be preferable
