Job Description Summary

Join our team as an Instrumentation & Controls Maintenance Technician, where you will perform a variety of complex maintenance tasks to support operations at GNF’s Fuel Manufacturing Operations facility. Your primary focus will be on the calibration, maintenance, troubleshooting, and enhancement of instrumentation and control systems, including DCS, PLCs, and various process control equipment. This role requires expertise in electronic control systems, calibration of diverse instruments, and a commitment to upholding nuclear safety standards.

Essential Functions

Essential functions include, but are not limited to:

• Nuclear Safety Culture:Embrace GNF’s nuclear safety culture, prioritizing integrity, safety, and quality in all tasks.
• Instrumentation Calibration & Maintenance:Perform calibration, maintenance, and repair of a wide range of instrumentation, including pressure transmitters, flow meters, temperature sensors, heater controls, control valves, pH analyzers, HF detectors, and scales. Ensure accurate and reliable operation of these instruments to support process control.
• DCS System Management:Troubleshoot and diagnose issues with the Distributed Control System (DCS).Develop and modify DCS code as needed to improve system functionality.Collaborate with operations and engineering to ensure seamless integration of DCS controls.
• PLC Programming & Troubleshooting:Troubleshoot PLC logic and hardware issues efficiently to minimize downtime.Write and modify PLC code to support process improvements and equipment upgrades.Maintain and service PLC hardware, including I/O modules, power supplies, and network communication systems.
• Test Equipment Utilization:Use a variety of test equipment, such as pressure gauges, oscilloscopes, signal generators, and process calibrators to diagnose and calibrate instrumentation systems.
• Technical Documentation & Interpretation:Read and interpret complex P&ID diagrams, mechanical schematics, electrical power diagrams, ladder logic, and instrument loop drawings.Suggest calibration and preventive maintenance methods when vendor guidelines are inadequate.Document modifications and updates to control systems, including “as-built” drawings and comprehensive sketches.
• CMMS Documentation & Compliance:Utilize the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to document, update, and close work orders accurately.Enter calibration data and maintenance activities into the CMMS to ensure traceability and compliance with regulatory requirements.Maintain thorough records of instrumentation calibrations, repairs, and preventive maintenance tasks.
• System Upgrades & Improvement:Identify areas of control and instrumentation inadequacy and recommend upgrades or new applications to enhance process reliability and performance.
• Compliance & Safety:Adhere to all safety, compliance, and quality regulations. Perform non-certified and certified N.B.S. traceable calibrations per written instructions or during troubleshooting activities.
• Independent Work & Collaboration:Operate with minimal supervision, using independent judgment for techniques and methods. Collaborate with supervisors, colleagues, vendors, and other stakeholders to resolve issues and provide support services.
• Additional Responsibilities:Perform other relevant duties as assigned to meet business needs.

Basic Qualifications/Requirements

• Education:Associate degree in Electronics, Instrumentation Technology, or a related technical field.ORHigh school diploma/GED with at least 10 years of experience in industrial process controls.
• Experience:Minimum of 2 years as a maintenance technician with a strong focus on industrial process controls, including maintenance of electrical and electronic equipment.Minimum 2 years of experience in calibration of instrumentation, including pressure, flow, temperature, pH, control valves, and other process measurement devices.Minimum 2 years of experience in reading and interpreting assembly drawings, P&ID diagrams, instrument loop sheets, schematics, ladder logic, and logic symbol schematics.Minimum 2 years of experience troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing industrial electrical, electronic, pneumatic, and mechanical process control equipment.Minimum 2 years of using electrical and electronic test equipment, such as oscilloscopes, programmable power supplies, optical pyrometers, and process calibrators.

Eligibility Requirements

• Work requires intense mental concentration to safely perform machine and equipment repair.
• Ability to perform mathematical calculations, read complex technical manuals.
• Ability to work in cold/heat.
• Ability to move around equipment, climb and work at elevated levels and in confined spaces. Ability to use ladders, go into pits and climb scaffolds. Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch and work in awkward positions while performing maintenance tasks.
• Ability and willingness to work in Radiological Controlled Access Areas, pass pulmonary function test and wear proper radiological personal protective equipment (PPE) including respirators and breathing air supplied hoods.
• Must be able to lift 40 pounds.
• Ability and willingness to work overtime without previous notice as necessary to meet business maintenance requirements.
• Valid Driver’s License. Must obtain fork truck/aerial lift certification.
• Ability to operate a computer.
• Ability and willingness to pass background check and site security requirements to access and perform work in the Controlled Access Area.
• Basic computer skills, including Microsoft suite, access and retrieval of information from the Internet, and experience updating maintenance and shop systems.

Desired Qualifications

• Advanced experience in instrumentation and controls, including Distributed Control Systems (DCS) troubleshooting, code development, bit forcing, and value adjustments.
• Proficiency in PLC programming, including writing, modifying, and troubleshooting PLC logic (e.g., Allen Bradley, Emerson).
• Experience with advanced calibration techniques, including certified N.B.S. traceable calibrations for critical process instruments.
• Familiarity with control valve diagnostics, configuration, and repair, including smart valve positioners and actuators.
• Experience with HMI (Human-Machine Interface) development and modifications for enhanced process control visibility.
• Strong understanding of network communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, Ethernet/IP) used in instrumentation and control systems.
